The Life Science industry in Central Germany is characterized by a wide range of innovative SMEs. Our region today comprises more than 200 dedicated biotech companies and more than 100 service providers in Thuringia, Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt. The regions's diversity is represented in eight sub-branches, along which we structure our efforts to put Central Germany on the international map of Life Sciences. These branches derive from the local competencies and also from the research profi les which scientific facilities offer in the region.
| BioInstruments are tools for biologists, physicians, pharmacists, e.g. microarray-based devices, robotic technologies, sensors and materials for solutions in the health sector. BioInstruments offer technical solutions utilizing cellular structures and functions as integral technological parts, e.g. proteins on biochips to facilitate parallelization and miniaturization. | ||
| Protein Engineering aims for the explanation and utilization of protein-based biological processes and metabolisms in living organisms. Protein Engineering is one the key technologies of biopharmaceutic development with applications in many areas. | ||
| Plant Biotechnology is at home in Central Germany. The local corporate history in plant breeding dates back more than 100 years. Next to traditional breeding methods, modern agro-business relies on new technologies such as gene and protein expression, phytofarming and plant metabolic engineering to enhance crop varieties or to develop phytopharmaceuticals and degradable biopolymers. | ||
| Neuroscience is an interdisciplinary frontier discipline devoted to the scientifi c study of the nervous system. While Magdeburg has been active in this fi eld for decades, Leipzig‘s new Max-Planck facility for neurocognition and Jena‘s Leibniz Institute for Age Research. Age Research as well as the German Dementia Center will further shape the branch. | ||
| Diagnostics & Analytics include the production of technical equipment, medical devices and analytic technologies for use in laboratories and the health sector. With new technologies such as high-throughput-screening and microarray-technology the branch is Central Germany’s strongest sector in Life Sciences. | ||
| Drug Development has a long tradition in Central Germany. Our strong corporate environment is the sound basis for a vibrant community of drug development companies at locations such as Halle, Leipzig and Dresden as well as pharmaceutical research groups in universities and independent scientifi c facilities. | ||
| Regenerative Medicine is the key branch in Core Biotechnology. Central Germany´s hotspots in this branch of Life Sciences are Leipzig with the research network RegMed-Net and Dresden, home to the Center for Regenerative Therapies (CRTD). | ||
| Industrial Biotechnology is often deemed “The Third Wave of Biotechnology”. With Central Germany’s strong chemical industry in the background, a twelve-billion-euro branch, industrial biotechnology is rapidly expanding in fields such as enzyme screening and biofuel production. | ||
| Life Science Related Services are crucial to the creation of sustainable value chains in Biotechnology. Life Science Companies depend on a multitude of services from bioinformatics to providers of clinical trials. Central Germany’s business community caters with about 80 service companies to the needs of the Life Science Industry. |
