On the way to a Central Germany Research Center for Algae Biotechnology

Algae are herbal organisms growing through photosynthesis and consumption of CO2. Algae comprise a huge family of more than 40.000 species. In the last years the scientific and commercial interest on the possible uses of the algue has risen dramatically. Algae provide multiple commerically interesting abilities, such as  the  binding CO2 and a huge potential to produce renewable materials. The Central German Research Centre adresses the need for concerted research efforts:

Algae...
  • ...are the earth's most important oxygen producers
  • ...are the most important primary producers
  • ...comprise more than 40.000 species, only 1 % are used commercially
  • ...transform three times more CO2 than crop plants.
  • ...contain a giant undiscovered spectrum of pharmacological substances and primary products for the chemical industry.
  • ..are five-times more efficient than higher plants in photosynthesis.

What has to be done..?

The biggest challenge for biological process technology in algae application is the development of new cultivation and application processes to use algae in a commerically and industrially feasible way.

The Central German Research Centre for Algae Biotechnology is a  transregional project to establish a  central and leading research and technology transfer facility  for algae biotechnology. The project is supported by several scientific and corporate partners from the biotechnology, process technology and pharmaceutical industry in the Central Germany region.
